And the Tony Award goes to… ‘Microsoft the Musical’? Just kidding. 150 interns and full-time employees at Microsoft recently released a full-on 8 minute video musical production. It centers around the premise that Bill Gates isn’t just a person, but an idea all can aspire to be. The lyrics were all original, and took the people involved 8 weeks to pull off after working on it during their mornings, weekends, and night.
Watch the video for yourself here:
Now, that you’ve watched it yourself, what did you think of it? Personally, I believe it’s borderline extremely hilarious and weird. Some parts were just plain weird and corny, while others I was laughing so much I was crying! However, I do appreciate that they are trying to inspire all people to not live within the mold, and go for their dreams. Here are just a few key takeaways I had from watching it.
60s & 70s Vibe In The Initial Scene
At the beginning, all I kept asking myself was, why was the guy in the first scene wearing a Christmas sweater? It’s nowhere near the holiday season. The only thing I could come up with is that it’s a throwback to the late 1960s and 1970s, since Microsoft was first founded in 1975. In the background, you can also see posters hanging up referencing:
- LIFE Magazine’s July 1969 Apollo 11 Special Edition Cover
- Woodstock (1969)
- The Beatles – Abbey Road Cover Image (1969)
- The Sound of Music (1965)
- “David Bowie” Album Cover Image (1969)
- Time Magazine’s July 1969 Man On The Moon Cover
- The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds Album Cover Image (1966)
The Many Microsoft References
There are numerous Microsoft references, even some dissing their own company. For example, they mentioned how they “missed a beat with Vista”, which is definitely true. They also mentioned that most of their products are well-known, except for when they tried to make their Windows phone.
However, they praised themselves multiple times mentioning their two-in-one product the Surface (which I highly recommend), Xbox partnership, HoloLens, Azure, Microsoft Office, and Clippy.
Is This A Stock Photo Shoot?
During some of the scenes, all I could think was that it looked like a stock photo shoot (like what’s pictured above at 7:23). The video seems too perfect at times to the point it was a little creepy. Not to mention all of the employees dressing in the Microsoft logo colors.
Where Did These Interns and Employees Learn To Sing and Dance?
The question that came to mind after watching the video in its entirety is, where did these employees and interns learn to sing and dance? Do they all have natural born talent or did they get professional help to pull off the video?
