Apple’s App Store Turns 10

Today, Apple’s App Store celebrates its tenth anniversary. It’s amazing to think about how the App Store has revolutionized gaming and apps in the digital world. Everyone knows that Apple loves celebrating milestones and product anniversaries. So, of course, the decade mark is making headlines. Marco Arment, an iOS developer, describes Apple’s App Store as the richest, most diverse, and most accessible software ecosystem the world has ever seen. Most consumers turn to Apple products rather than smaller companies like OnePlus.

Apple describes this milestone:

“How Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ignited a Worldwide App Phenomenon”

How Did It Begin?

The app phenomenon began with the launch of the Apple App Store in 2008. The store opened on July 10, 2008, with only 500 apps including the game, MLB At Bat. A year later, those 500 apps on the shelves turned into 50,000 apps. I’m no mathematician, but that is a stark increase in 365 days. The goal of the App Store was to deliver a “magical experience to customers” and put this new software in their hands.

Before the creation of the App Store, several large companies controlled the industry. Developers didn’t have the freedom they needed to put forth their products. The App Store allowed developers, big or small, to present their apps to the world. The initial apps released were gaming-related, and now there are apps for nearly every topic. Most recently, fitness, health, and wellness apps have taken over.

Apple’s App Store

Apple’s App Store is loved by both users and developers. It has been the easiest way for developers to get their apps out there and known by the public. iPhone lovers can quickly download these apps and try them. If they don’t like that particular app, there are millions more to choose from. Most free and paid applications include stores featuring items for purchase that can enhance the user experience. The number of in-game purchases is continually increasing as is listening to phone calls.

One of the most popular games created by Apple, Temple Run, has been downloaded roughly a billion times. We are living in a time where people want streamlined and fast gaming experiences. Users don’t want to wait hours for a game to download on their PS4. Why wait several hours when you can download a mobile game in under 5 minutes?

Top Games Ranked By App Annie

Top Games Of 2018

According to App Annie, who ranked the most popular games for iOS, the number one app is Candy Crush Saga. This isn’t a surprise as I have seen many of my friends playing this game. Even though I never understood the game’s allure, I have downloaded the #9 game, Temple Run. The fact that Temple Run is one of the first online games created and is still played today speaks volumes. While there are many games to play online, many people stay with their favorites.

Start-up Businesses

Start-ups such as Uber, Instacart, and Instagram have utilized iOS services to grow their businesses. Who knows if these companies would be as known today if they didn’t use these services. Apps are becoming increasingly integral for a business to grow in the large and competitive marketplace. They also allow businesses to better communicate with their customers, whether they need help to book a hotel or to pay a bill. Or if someone is hacking Facebook messages.

The Next Decade

Apple product enthusiasts and developers share in the excitement of what the future will bring (likely more iPhones and apps). Apple’s App Store can only move up from here. From furthering businesses to developers, to giving control to the consumer, there are so many benefits that App Store has brought about. We’ll have to wait and see what the next year and decade of apps will bring. How will they change and how will they stay the same?

Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Apple

“In its first decade, the App Store has surpassed all of our wildest expectations — from the innovative apps that developers have dreamed up to the way customers have made apps part of their daily lives — and this is just the beginning. We could not be more proud of what developers have created and what the next 10 years have in store.”

Happy 10th Anniversary App Store! We can only imagine what the next ten years will bring!
